Available Positions

Entry/Mid Level Estimator

Structural Associates Inc. (SAI) is a General Contractor with Corporate Office located in Syracuse, NY and Regional Offices located in Watertown NY and Portsmouth, NH.  We have an opening for an entry/mid-level estimator with responsibilities as outlined below.  This position is located at our Syracuse NY or Watertown, NY Offices.  

The position requires at a minimum a 2 or 4 year construction/technology/engineering degree or an equivalent program.  Some prior estimating experience/training is preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Estimator is a detail oriented person that reports to the Chief Estimator and is responsible for accurate quantity take offs, participation in pricing of elements of work, development of subcontract scopes, subcontractor/vendor outreach, assistance in analyzing scopes, attending site visits, assisting in purchasing and negotiating contracts and other duties related to the accurate and timely preparation of project bids.  Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential.  

General listing of job duties (not intended to be all inclusive):

  • Prepare for work to be accomplished by gathering information/requirements, review project documents and set priorities with Chief Estimator
  • Prepare for estimate by studying plans, specifications, amendments
  • Coordinate with Chief Estimator in preparing Requests for Information (RFI’s)
  • Assist in preparation of work scopes for distribution to subcontractors/vendors
  • Develop relationships through communication with prospective subcontractors/vendors
  • Obtain bids from subcontractors/vendors
  • Assist in resolving cost/scope discrepancies in quotes received 
  • Assist in preparing bid day project schedule for coordination of general conditions and subcontractors
  • Work as a team member to develop conceptual design approach to prepare design-build estimates
  • Develop expertise in accurately completing quantity takeoffs for SAI self-performed work activities 
  • Utilize corporate cost estimating format to prepare cost estimates for self-performed work
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Aggressively follow-up with subcontractors to ensure that bids are received.
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills required
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Prepare documents utilizing Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, Project
  • Exhibit self-motivation and ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Exhibit excellent follow up skills both internally and externally

Assistant Project Manager

The Assistant Project Manager position is a developmental position with the goal, subject to satisfactory performance, to lead to the position as Project Manager.  The Assistant Project Manager will work under the supervision of assigned Project Manager(s) to develop the skills necessary to work independently to actively manage the client relationship and scope of a project through its construction cycle.  The construction cycle of a project includes a variety of components and requires a critical partnership with the Project Superintendent, Quality Control Manager, Site Safety and Health Officer, Trade Foremen and leadership relationship with subcontractors and trades persons.

Required qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering, construction management or architectural disciplines
  • 2 – 3 years experience in construction related management or technical position considered as a plus, but not required depending on applicants resume
  • Valid drivers license
  • Strong oral & written communication skills
  • Inter-personal & team organizing skills
  • Ability to pass DoD security clearance for access to military installations
  • Technical competency in use of Microsoft software (Word, Excel)
  • Prior experience/training in CPM scheduling considered as a plus

 Work Environment:

  • Candidate would be assigned to either SAI’s Corporate Office in Syracuse, NY or Regional Office in Watertown, NY 
  • Would require periodic travel to project location.  SAI performs work throughout the United States

Primary Duties

  1. Complete familiarity with contract drawings and specifications for all assigned projects
  2. Participate in preparation/updating of the project schedule and Owner payment requisitions
  3. Attend and participate, as required, in project related meetings
  4. Collaborate with project team related to quality control and safety management
  5. As part of the project team work to build and strengthen relationships with SAI project team, Owner representatives, subcontractors
  6. Coordinate with SAI estimating staff and assist in material purchasing and subcontractor awards
  7. Coordinate with SAI accounting staff and Project Manager in subcontractor/supplier invoice approval
  8. Assist Project Manager in the preparation of change order proposals
  9. Assist Project Manager in developing budget vs. cost projections
  10. Prepare project close-out documentation    
  11. Assist Project Manager in preparing/tracking RFI’s, submittals, permits, contracts

This is a salaried, exempt position.  Compensation dependent on qualifications and any prior experience

Structural Associates, Inc. is an Open Shop general contractor, our primary market is the Federal/DoD customer providing both design-bid-build and design-build services throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic States.
