Project Description

SAI was awarded this “best value” firm fixed price contract to construct a new fuel storage and Type III hydrant distribution system at Westover ARB in Massachusetts.

The project includes the phased installation of 7,00 LF of new 14” fuel loop distribution piping, 14 hydrant pits, 2 isolation Pits around the existing active aircraft parking apron in 6 phases with extensive cutting and demolition of existing 8,000 cy of heavy-duty concrete apron and taxiway airfield pavement. The excavation was fully sheeted, and existing in situ soils, ground water were petroleum contaminated. 

The existing fuel distribution piping system with asbestos containing coatings and consisting of 8,200 LF fuel loop distribution piping, 21 pits consisting of Hydrant, Flange, Vent/ Drain and Electrical was demolished / removed / abandoned in place.

The off-apron work consists of demolishing the existing fuel pumphouse equipment then renovating the pumphouse with installation of new 3,600 gpm fuel pumping system, fuel control room, 2 truck loading stations and unloading area with 2 unloading stations, product recovery system, emergency generator, two 5,000 bbl aboveground fuel storage tanks. The two associated 50,000 gallon tanks were filled with lightweight concrete fill, then selectively demolished,

Following successful commissioning of the new fuel system three existing pumphouses and associated underground fuel tanks are demolished. The existing pumphouses buildings had asbestos containing materials and lead based paints. Four 50, 000 gallon underground fuel storage tanks, one 6,000 gallon  underground jet fuel product recovery tank, three 8000 gallon underground waste JP-8 fuel oil tanks were removed. Four 48,000 gallon underground JP-8 tanks were filled with lightweight concrete fill then abandoned in place.
